How to have your browser automatically check for you
Posted July 22, 2004

When you visit a web page your computer places a copy of the page on your computer. When you go back to the same page, your computer shows you the copy it has made from your previous visit, so it doesn't have to download the information again (which takes time.) You may not be seeing the most recent version of each page.

To be sure you are seeing the latest version of a web page, you can select (left click on) the REFRESH or RELOAD button on your browser.

Or, you can configure your browser to do this automatically for you.

There are several browsers available to use to surf the Internet. The two most common are:

Internet Explorer (IE)

Netscape Navigator

If you happen to be using AOL (America On Line), I would strongly recommend you get rid of it (ask me why when you see me), but if you are using it, after you make your Internet connection, close the AOL browser and open up IE or Netscape. You can download either at their respective websites.

If you have a MAC- you will have to translate this into your terms. Sorry, I have a PC.

IF YOU USE INTERNET EXPLORER:

  • Step 1: Select the <TOOLS> menu from the top of your screen
  • Step 2: Select the Internet Options menu item
  • Step 3: Select the Settings button
  • Step 4: Select the radio button that says "Every visit to the page"
  • Step 5: Select the OK button, and then select the OK button to close the Internet Options window.

IF YOU USE NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR:

  • Step 1: Select the <EDIT> menu from the top of your screen
  • Step 2: Select the Preferences menu item
  • Step 3: Select the Advanced setting button
  • Step 4: Select the Cache menu item
  • Step 5: Select the radio button "Every time I view the page"
  • Step 6: Select OK to save your options and close the Preferences window
